The Way of Love ~ Part 2
If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love,
I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.
1 Corinthians 13:1
Lord, I want to show love when I speak, and when I write too. I don’t want to be puffed up and proud, but want to glorify you in all I say. May your Holy Spirit fill me with words that edify and encourage others, not tear down. And may I never be a clanging symbol when I talk about you. May I speak love.
With the political environment in America showing itself every single time the news is on, we hear a lot of noisy gongs and clanging symbols, don’t we? There are just some people who are happiest when they hear their own voice. And often, maybe more often than not, love is lacking. No matter how intelligent or well-spoken so.meone is, when love isn’t there it shows
When I reflected on 1 Corinthians 13:1, I asked God to direct me to words that speak truth and love as I write part two of The Way Of Love. I don’t ever want to cause someone to plug their ears when I speak – or when I write.
But they do.
The primary reason they tune me out isn’t that I am a clanging symbol or that I don’t show love, it’s they don’t want to hear about Jesus. They may be on a journey full of conflict, pain, sorrow, or indecision. And when they ask for help, I share my lifestyle of leaning on the Lord with all of my heart.
They mentally roll their eyes, and yawn and “here she goes again” is written all over their face.
But you know what? If I did not have the love of the Lord in my life, I would be on the other side of the table asking them for advice. I would be begging for help and direction as I stumbled on a rocky road, not knowing which way to go.
Our lives are messy, full of roller-coaster rides all day long. Happy at one point, minutes later frustration can set in. All day long we will experience the highs and lows of life.
But there is an answer.
We can live a life that speaks love. It is amazingly life changing.
Speak love loudly. Speak it from a Christian worldview. And speak it with joy, gentleness and kindness.
Leave your clanging symbols attached to the toy bear or monkey, and put on a heart of love.
I’m very excited to be writing this little series on love. Stay tune for part three tomorrow when we look at the next verse in 1 Corinthians 13.
