A Pilot’s Story – Steve Scheibner

September 11th, 2001

September 11 – a day we will never forget. We all remember where we are, what we were doing, how we reacted to the horrific news that America was under attack.

Living in Arizona, I was still in “wake-up mode” since we were a couple of hours earlier. I remember my oldest daughter’s scream from upstairs to turn on the television . . . that a plane had hit the Twin Towers! Numbly, I watched the news with the rest of my family and felt denial take over my emotions. I stayed home from work; glued to the news all day. The minute by minute updates shocked and bewildered Americans from coast to coast, and really, all around the world. America was under attack!

We cried. We prayed. We mourned. We were angry. We became more patriotic.

By nature, I am a joy-bringer. But I was at a loss during this time, unsteady and questioning.

How do we find joy in such horrors after thousands of lives were lost?

This is a remarkable story that is well worth taking 15 minutes out of your busy day to watch, to remember, to see how God is using a pilot who was supposed to fly one of the planes that day 14 years ago, for His glory. (If you’re short on time, start watching at 11:00 min).

“September 10, 2001, First Officer Steve Scheibner packed his suitcase and waited for the phone call finalizing his assignment to fly American Airlines Flight 11, from Boston to Los Angeles. The call never came. In My Seat recounts the events leading up to Flight 11 and the subsequent death of Tom McGuinness in the seat that should have been filled by Steve Scheibner.” -Character Health

“Steve Scheibner went to bed September 10, 2001, with his bags packed and ready to go. He was scheduled to be the pilot on American Airlines Flight 11 the next day. When he woke in the morning, however, a rare last-minute substitution meant someone else would pilot that plane… the first plane that hit the World Trade Center on 9/11.” – Amazon Books
