Count Your Blessings, Not Your Burdens

Blessings are from God, depression is not.

“According to the ADAA, depression affects approximately 14.8 million American adults, or about 6.7percent of the U.S. population age 18 and older in a given year. Persistent depressive disorder, or PDD, (formerly called dysthymia) is a form of depression that usually continues for at least two years.”

Much of the depression, it seems, is in the Christian community, anxiety and hopelessness permeate our churches. Challenges in relationships, finances, employment, health and dozens of other life events create opportunities for hopelessness.

Depression can be debilitating for some and yet there are those with enormous challenges that seem to have overcome the hopelessness and depression you would expect. What is the key? How do some people overcome the odds and others seem to be trapped by hopelessness?

Romans 12:2

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

This video, Overcoming Hopelessness | Nick Vujicic | TEDxNoviSad,  is a beautiful example of what faith can do and how only Jesus Christ can pull us from the depths of despair and hopelessness and help us to focus on what we have and not what we don’t have. Nick is in inspiration and a testament to the power of hope and the thought process necessary to overcome any challenge we face.

Watch this video and then be encouraged by the verses below to fight the battle and break the chains of hopelessness by counting your blessings instead. Nick Vujicic gives the insight on how he overcame depression by focusing on what he was thankful for instead. If you don’t know Nick, you should…

Genesis 49:24-26

 But his bow remained steady,
his strong arms stayed limber,
because of the hand of the Mighty One of Jacob,
because of the Shepherd, the Rock of Israel,
because of your father’s God, who helps you,
because of the Almighty, who blesses you
with blessings of the skies above,
blessings of the deep springs below,
blessings of the breast and womb.
Your father’s blessings are greater
than the blessings of the ancient mountains,
than the bounty of the age-old hills.
Let all these rest on the head of Joseph,
on the brow of the prince among his brothers.

Psalm 21:6

Surely you have granted him unending blessings and made him glad with the joy of your presence.

Psalm 128:2

You will eat the fruit of your labor; blessings and prosperity will be yours.

Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.

Acts 13:34

God raised him from the dead so that he will never be subject to decay. As God has said, “‘I will give you the holy and sure blessings promised to David.’

Matthew 5:1-11

Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, and he began to teach them.

The Beatitudes

He said:

“Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled.
Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart,
for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11 “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
