A popular American gospel musician, choir director, and author – Kirk Dewayne Franklin is a renowned name in the Christian music artist arena. Born on January 26, 1970, he is a leading name contemporary gospel like The Family, God’s Property and One Nation Crew (1NC). Till today, he has won several awards that include 7 Grammy Awards. From Fort Worth, Texas, Kirk was raised by her aunt, Gertrude, as his mother abandoned him after the birth. It was his aunt, who raised money, by collecting and reselling aluminum cans, for Kirk to take piano lessons from the tender age of four. He excelled in music, able to read and write music, and learnt to play by ear.

At the age of seven, he first received his contract which was turned down by his aunt. Later, at the age of twelve, he joined the church choir and also became the music director of the Mt. Rose Baptist Church’s adult choir. Despite his strict upbringing, Kirk rebelled in his teenage years, got him into a lot of troubles. To keep him out of troubles, his grandmother sent him to a professional youth conservatory associated with a local university. He was accepted by the authority and seemed his life on track, but the sudden announcement of his girlfriend’s pregnancy and his expulsion from school due to behavioral problems again soured his life.

He studied music with Jewell Kelly and the Singing Chaparrals at the Oscar Dean Wyatt High School. He was under the guardianship of Kelly who taught him music direction and allowed him to become a pianist for the choir. After the death of his friend, Franklin returned to the church to find solace and eventually began to direct the choir once again. During that time, he co-founded as gospel group titled as The Humble Hearts which recorded one of the Franklin’s compositions, earning him the attention of the legendary gospel musician- Milton Biggham. Impressed by Kirk’s singing talent, Biggham enlisted him to lead DFW Mass Choir and recorded Franklin’s song “Every Day with Jesus”. This led Biggham to hire the 20 year old (then) Franklin, to lead the choir at the 1990 Gospel Music Workshop of America Convention.2

Lyrics

“Wanna Be Happy?”

by Kirk Franklin

The truth can hurt you
Or the truth can change you
What would truth do to you

I just wanna be happy
But if I keep on doing the things
That keep on bringing me pain
There’s no one else I can blame
If I’m not happy
Wasted time but now I can see
The biggest enemy, it was me
So I’m not happy

Cry yourself to sleep
Shout and raise your hands
It won’t change a thing child
Until you understand
(Preach)

If you’re tired of being the same
If you’re tired of things not changing
It’s time for you to get out the way
Don’t get stuck in how you feel
Say Jesus take the wheel
He knows the road that you need to take
(But it only works if)
If you wanna be happy
(Look at yourself and say)
Don’t you wanna be happy
I just wanna be happy

But if I keep on giving my heart
For people to tear apart
The healing will never start
So I can be happy
Will I ever be happy

Cry yourself to sleep
Shout and raise your hands
It won’t change a thing child
Until you understand

(If I’m talking to you now say)
If you’re tired of being the same
If you’re tired of things not changing
It’s time for you to get out the way
(You been down too long)
Don’t get stuck in how you feel
Say Jesus take the wheel
He knows the road that you need to take
(I feel different right here)
It’s so easy to complain
Addicted to the pain
You give your heart, they push it away
(But I got good news for ya)
Jesus knows just how you feel
Just let Him take the wheel
The love you need, He already gave
(But the question is)
Do you wanna be happy
(If you’re tired of you then say)
I just wanna be happy
(Now if you really mean that, open up your heart and say it)

Let me hear you say yeah
Yeah yeah
(If you’re tired of going in circles)
Let me hear you say yeah
Yeah yeah
(Tired of making the same mistakes)
Let me hear you say yeah
Yeah yeah
(But now’s your chance)
Let me hear you say yeah
(Say yeah)
Yeah yeah

If you’re tired of being the same
If you’re tired of things not changing
It’s time for you to get out the way
(Are you ready, come on)
Don’t get stuck in how you feel
Say Jesus take the wheel
(Won’t He do it)
He knows the road that you need to take
(So easy to complain)
It’s so easy to complain
(Come on)
Addicted to the pain
You give your heart, they push it away
(There’s somebody that’ll never leave ya)
Jesus knows just how you feel
Just let Him take the wheel
The love you need, He already gave
(But the question is)
Do you wanna be happy
(Took a long time but I’m ready)
I just wanna be happy
(Thank you Lord, every day ask yourself)
Do you wanna be happy
(Yes, pull over, let him drive)
I just wanna be happy3

Christian Music Challenge
The Christian Music Challenge 2.0 Devotional is our 30-day series of short video devotionals to encourage you to understand God’s purpose for Christian music and to incorporate it in your daily life.
This devotional is based on Al Menconi’s book, The Christian Music Challenge, which in turn was inspired by the biblical principle found in Isaiah 26:3 that reminds us to keep our mind focused on Christ and biblical principles, causing us to experience the peace of God. This is NOT salvation but simply a means to help us grow in our faith.
We developed the wristband as a reminder to continually focus on transforming your mind while you are going through the devotional.
We developed the tee shirt to encourage all participants to engage the public. It will get people wondering until they read the Scripture reference under “washed.” Romans 12:2 commands, “…do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”
That’s what the Christian Music Challenge will help you do. Brain Wash, Wash Brain = Clean Brain. We are all about renewing our minds, which is helping us to become transformed to the likeness of Christ.
We strongly encourage all parents and teachers to read the Christian Music Challenge book. This will help you understand the pressure your children are experiencing daily and enable you to communicate values to your children.
