Gratitude ~ Evening Prayer

Prayer is Gratitude

If the only prayer you ever say in your entire life is thank you, it will be enough.1

Meister Eckhart

The Evening Prayer tonight is a very simple thanks to the Lord for a day filled with the tiniest blessings that all add up. Blessings upon blessings fill our hearts with joy and gratitude and makes for a better night’s sleep as we drift off into a peaceful slumber. When I stumbled upon the quote by Meister Eckhart, I liked it but had to process it. I take things literally sometimes, which is off for an artist. But then I made a list of some recent things I could thank God for this evening.

Thank You, God:

  1. For loving me

  2. For sending Jesus to die for me

  3. For forgiving my sins

  4. For guiding my way

  5. For taking my anxiety away

  6. For helping me with work

  7. For hearing my prayer for a sick friend

  8. For wisdom

  9. For food

  10. For healing my heart

  11. For hearing my cries

  12. For answered prayer

  13. For protecting me

  14. For everything . . . .

So yes, I agree with Meister Eckhart, a thankful heart is enough in the simplest form, because, after all, every prayer can be a prayer of thanks even when we are requesting God’s attention. I can thank Him for hearing me, for giving me His attention, and for answering my prayer.

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.2
