I know that Jesus is the light of the world because He said so…
Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”
If I follow Jesus and have “the light of life”, I have to ask myself what my responsibility is as a Christian? Jesus gives me the answer in the message which has come to be known as “The Sermon on the Mount:”
You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.
Am I letting my light shine? It has been said that “you may be the only Bible that some person ever reads.”1 What are they reading in my words and actions? Have I pointed someone, anyone, to Jesus because they were witness to something I said or did? The realization that people are watching me is sobering.
But I am encouraged because Jesus doesn’t give me or you an assignment without equipping us for it. He has given us the strength, the courage, the wisdom, the means, the LIGHT to carry out the task which he has assigned to us:
For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth), finding out what is acceptable to the Lord. And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them. For it is shameful even to speak of those things which are done by them in secret. But all things that are exposed are made manifest by the light, for whatever makes manifest is light. Therefore He says:
“Awake, you who sleep,
Arise from the dead,
And Christ will give you light.”
Rick Warren has this to say about it:
This is a portrait of discipleship. Jesus, who is the light of the world, re-creates us into the light of the world. We are light, not because of anything in ourselves, but because we are in a supernatural union with the light of the world. He calls us to follow after him, and he says, “Whoever follows me will have the light of life and will never walk in darkness” (John 8:12 TEV).2
Wow! Just think about it! “Jesus, who is the light of the world, recreates us into the light of the world.” (emphasis mine)
The world becomes a brighter place whenever Christians serve the Lord and let The Light shine!
