“Comparison is the thief of joy.”
As a short brunette with freckles, I wanted to be a tall blond with blue eyes like my friend Dawn in my fourth-grade class. And Dawn wanted Theresa’s beautiful red hair. And you guessed it; Theresa wanted my dark hair because people called her carrot top. It took us several years to stop comparing ourselves against one another, but we finally did . . . accepting ourselves and embracing our unique looks.
Comparing ourselves to anyone else is harmful because God, in His divine creation, designed us all to be different. As a result, He has a wonderful plan for each of us that is going to reflect His love and plan for our individual lives. And you know what? We should rejoice in His plans, and not covet someone else’s life.
For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord,
plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.
Jeremiah 29:11 ESV
God’s plans are unique for each of us.
God might send me to my neighborhood to share Jesus with everyone within my reach. He may send you to Australia, or Brazil, or Canada to do the same. His plan for every person is going to be uniquely different because He knows where we can do the most good for His glory, where we can serve Him best.
The enemy of God loves us to doubt God.
When God’s plans don’t unfold as fast as we’d like, satan likes to disrupt our lives by creating havoc by pushing us to compare our lives with another’s. The enemy loves us to do this, so we experience doubt, fear, jealousy, anxiety, sadness, worry, and anything that takes our eyes off of the one we follow: Jesus.
God has a future with hope for us.
Trust Him. Wait on Him. And pray. Pray for direction in your life, for the Spirit’s help in decisions that you will make, and for the unfolding of God’s perfect plan for you. Just for you: His living color, exploding with joy and fabulous plan for your life. And then, as He opens doors, shuts windows, and hands you keys to new opportunities, dance with joy that you are you: a beloved and unique child of the King!
Five hints while you wait on God’s plan:
Keep your eyes on the Lord and in His word.
Don’t become derailed by comparing yourself with other people.
Refuse to allow jealousy, bitterness, and envy to take residence in your heart.
While you’re waiting for God to reveal His plans, serve Him and others.
Pray without ceasing.
