I’m glad Jesus is the only way to heaven.
I don’t know about traffic laws in other countries, but here in the United States, we are all familiar with “one-way” signs on city streets. These signs designate that a particular street allows traffic to go only in one direction. When we choose to travel down such a street, we rest assured that all vehicles will be traveling in the same direction. But did you know that there is only one way to heaven?
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.
No one comes to the Father except through Me.
This is the sixth in a series of seven “I Am” statements that Jesus made about himself as recorded in the Gospel of John. He did not say that He is “a way”, but rather that He is “the way.”
When I was a child, I became aware that I had two relatives who believed in reincarnation and yet they also said they believed Jesus was the Son of God. It was confusing to me. How could they believe in both? Were there two ways or one way?
As I grew older and learned more about God’s word, I realized there was no way they could profess belief in both Christianity and reincarnation. If I could save myself through coming back to earth in a human body time and time again until I worked out all the wrongs I had done in many lifetimes and only then be able to spend the rest of eternity in an “ascended” state, there would be no reason for Jesus to become the perfect sacrifice for my sins.
Reincarnation demands that I return to earth over and over and over and spend many, many lifetimes improving myself until I am finally perfected and no longer have to come back in another human body. What a terrible thought!
There is no other way into the presence of God than by accepting the Lord’s death as payment in full for our sins. As Peter said, “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12) Jesus is the only remedy God has provided for man’s sin problem. He is the only way to eternal life. This is the truth of God’s Word.1
In these words, Jesus was declaring Himself the great “I Am,” the only path to heaven, the only true measure of righteousness, and the source of both physical and spiritual life.2
How gracious a God we have in that He made the way for us by sending His only begotten Son to earth as the Lamb of God so that we do not have to work and work and work our way into heaven!
For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.
Years ago I took part in a Bible study that went in-depth into the study of the seven I AM statements of Jesus. These statements are so spiritually profound that a quick reading of them does not offer a full understanding of what they mean. They are worthy of deeper study. Through listening to messages by well-educated Bible scholars and through the use of commentaries I was able to gain a much greater appreciation of and thankfulness for God’s word and for the work that Jesus completed for me (and you) on the cross.
The more we learn about Jesus, the greater our assurance, and thus our joy, will be!
