Meet The Parents Before You Decide To Date

You can learn a lot about people when you meet their parents.

Parents play a huge role in the behavior and beliefs of their children; moms and dads influence who their kids become as adults. By spending time observing the values, morals, and beliefs of the parents, you can see some of the challenges you might face in a dating relationship.

Jeremiah 32:18

You show love to thousands but bring the punishment for the parents’ sins into the laps of their children after them. Great and mighty God, whose name is the Lord Almighty,

Not all good kids come from good parents, and not all bad kids come from bad parents. When you are first getting to know someone, he or she will be on his or her best behavior. They will often be polite, engaging and interested as the relationship blossoms. However, as time goes by, the social virtues are revealed, and the source of those virtues often points back to the parents.

Psalm 116:16

Truly I am your servant, Lord; I serve you just as my mother did; you have freed me from my chains.

As our world expands, it becomes harder and harder to meet the parents of the person you are dating. Jade and Cael met in college. Jade’s mom lives in Phoenix, her dad in Toronto and she and Cael live in Portland. Cael’s parents live in Orlando. Jade and Cael do not have the resources to fly around the country meeting each other’s parents. They are investing in a relationship where they don’t have all the facts and the history of family dynamics to make an educated decision about compatibility, values, beliefs and behaviors.

Proverbs 17:25

A foolish son brings grief to his father and bitterness to the mother who bore him.

Spending time with the parents of the person you are interested in getting to know is a logical and wise as researching a car manufacturer. You can look at the reputation, the operating procedures, safety record and dozens of other clues of the value of your investment. You either trust the brand or do not.

Let God reveal to you the source of earthly love and carefully consider the inputs that will eventually show up. Every family is a blended family.

Love Quote: Proverbs 23:25

May your father and mother rejoice; may she who gave you birth be joyful!
