I feel fortunate that my mother taught me to have hope in Christ.
My mother’s example is responsible for my steadfast faith in life after death and for that alone, I will always be thankful to her although there are many other reasons why I am fortunate that she was my mother.
Now I am not saying that I haven’t thought about the method of dying that would be preferable, but I probably don’t have a choice in the matter. Only God knows when our moment of death will come, and he also knows the method by which we will die. Personally, I would like to go to sleep some night and wake up in heaven. My great-grandmother passed from this life that way, and so did my best friend.
Unfortunately, many people, Christian and non-Christian alike, are afraid to die. They don’t even like to contemplate death. As a Christian, though, my hope is in Christ because I believe that Jesus was speaking the truth when he said:
“I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live.
When Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life,” He was claiming to be the source of both. There is no resurrection apart from Christ, and there is no eternal life apart from Christ. Beyond that, Jesus was also making a statement concerning His divine nature. He does more than give life; He is life, and therefore death has no ultimate power over Him. Jesus confers this spiritual life on those who believe in Him so that they share His triumph over death (1 John 5:11-12). Believers in Jesus Christ will experience resurrection because, having the life Jesus gives, it is impossible for death to defeat them (1 Corinthians 15:53-57).1
For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2: 8-10
Christianity doesn’t have to be complicated. Eternal life is a gift – simply believe! Therein lies my hope and my lack of fear of death. How can it be any other way? “My hope is built on nothing less:”
