Why can pride be so destructive?
What is pride? Pride is anything we place higher than the One who made you and me.
It’s interesting, really, how often as humans it’s easy to resort to worry, doubt, insecurity – and how much of all three of those things actually come from this thing called pride. We think we know what we need more than God knows what we need. We doubt ourselves when God created us to live in His assurance. We live in the insecurity of our personal appearance or where we are going in life. We have a Savior, who loves to whisper to our hearts how loved we really are.
I think of pride as neglecting to surrender something, and therefore losing alertness around the negative things that try to creep into my mind. It’s almost like we surrender it one time, thinking that is enough and we’re invincible. We’re standing on the mountaintop of freedom, but we’re forgetting that just beneath our feet are cliffs on every side. We are called to live in freedom, yes, however, true freedom is found when we are staying alert in knowing how much we need God not once, not twice, but in every moment of our lives. I found three scriptures which have helped me with this vicious cycle called pride:
Pride goes before destruction, and haughtiness before a fall.
Surrender yourself to God daily, and after you’ve surrendered, allow him to continue to fight for you.
Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.
Stay alert, so that pride can’t take over. Always remember it is God’s accomplishment and praise!
“My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord.
And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine.
For just as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so my ways are higher than your ways
and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.
Remember, if you are struggling with something, God always, always, always knows what he’s doing.
Jesus is sovereign above all things, and he has an amazing plan for your life, better than anything you could ever imagine.
