Psalm 17 ~ A Prayer for Protection

A Prayer for Protection

Last summer I was driving alone on one of my road trips and there was not a lot of traffic, but I paid close attention to my surroundings. All of a sudden, three men in an SUV drove up very close to the back of my car, and of course, I was alarmed. I quickly asked God for help, to protect me from harm, and to keep me safe. I could feel my heart jumping out of my chest, even knowing I was in His hands. I even grabbed my wasp spray for protection!

With certainty, we can all rest knowing that nothing will happen to us that God isn’t fully aware. To phrase it another way, He is watching over us at all times and His will trumps everything. In the first five verses of Psalm 17, David reminds God of his integrity. As though God doesn’t know, right? But sometimes I do the same thing, mentioning to God I’m following in obedience to Him. It’s our human nature. God must smile at us a lot.

Sometimes God allows bad things to happen for His purpose in our lives, other times He steps in and stops them. God is never on a coffee break where our life issues take Him by surprise. So like David, I often tell God to test my heart, and He will see that I am walking according to His will. And in the case of the three scary men: they were getting close to my car to pass me . . . And didn’t even give me a second glance!

Read Psalm 17 today. It’s 15 verses long. And please enjoy this music brought to us by The Psalms Project.

In the Shadow of Your Wings

A Prayer of David.

17 Hear a just cause, O Lord; attend to my cry!
    Give ear to my prayer from lips free of deceit!
From your presence let my vindication come!
    Let your eyes behold the right!

You have tried my heart, you have visited me by night,
    you have tested me, and you will find nothing;
    I have purposed that my mouth will not transgress.
With regard to the works of man, by the word of your lips
    I have avoided the ways of the violent.
My steps have held fast to your paths;
    my feet have not slipped.

I call upon you, for you will answer me, O God;
    incline your ear to me; hear my words.
Wondrously show your steadfast love,
    O Savior of those who seek refuge
    from their adversaries at your right hand.

Keep me as the apple of your eye;
    hide me in the shadow of your wings,
from the wicked who do me violence,
    my deadly enemies who surround me.

10 They close their hearts to pity;
    with their mouths they speak arrogantly.
11 They have now surrounded our steps;
    they set their eyes to cast us to the ground.
12 He is like a lion eager to tear,
    as a young lion lurking in ambush.

13 Arise, O Lord! Confront him, subdue him!
    Deliver my soul from the wicked by your sword,
14 from men by your hand, O Lord,
    from men of the world whose portion is in this life.
You fill their womb with treasure;
    they are satisfied with children,
    and they leave their abundance to their infants.

15 As for me, I shall behold your face in righteousness;
    when I awake, I shall be satisfied with your likeness.
