Psalm 8 ~ The Majestic Name

Psalm 8

Oh, how I love the majestic name of the Lord!

Most of us who actively read and know the Psalms gravitate towards this Psalm: it is a song to the Lord, praising His name above all the earth, in heaven, and in the entire universe.

David is intensely aware of His Creator and of the works of His hands. He even reminds God how He has made us to praise Him. He also talks to the Lord about His creation of the heavens, moon and stars along with the animals, birds and fish. It’s not that God doesn’t know about these things since He made them, but David is acknowledging the Lord’s amazing creation process and appreciating what He has done for mankind on earth.

It’s awe-inspiring to find a place where the city lights aren’t shouting for attention, and look up into the clear, night sky, and join with David in praise. Praise to the Lord, let the whole earth sing the Lord’s name! His name is to be above all and that includes everything” family, friends, work, worries, anxieties, distractions, and emotions.

Grasp hold of this Psalm, and place it in your heart as you join David is saying “O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!

Psalm 8 ~ ESV Translation

O Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
You have set your glory above the heavens.
Out of the mouth of babies and infants,
you have established strength because of your foes,
to still the enemy and the avenger.

When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,
what is man that you are mindful of him,
and the son of man that you care for him?

Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings[b]
and crowned him with glory and honor.
You have given him dominion over the works of your hands;
you have put all things under his feet,
all sheep and oxen,
and also the beasts of the field,
the birds of the heavens, and the fish of the sea,
whatever passes along the paths of the seas.

O Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
