Most people want to settle down…eventually.
God created a hole in our hearts for Him, along with a desire to be loved by others and to settle down.
This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says to all those I carried into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon: “Build houses and settle down; plant gardens and eat what they produce. Marry and have sons and daughters; find wives for your sons and give your daughters in marriage, so that they too may have sons and daughters. Increase in number there; do not decrease.
When you start out on the journey toward finding a life mate, you are filled with excitement and anticipation. Often, you will meet someone that catches your attention, and you want to get to know that person more.
You court, you date, and then…you settle. Wait, what?
Dating with marriage in mind is not like choosing a set of dishes in your first apartment or a car to drive during college. Yet, so many people settle for the easiest, fastest way to fill the void and settle down when they should be settling up.
If the idea of dating is to find out if this is the person God has for you to settle down with, then why do so many people settle for less? God does not want us to have a spouse that is “better than nothing.” He created each of us to experience the fullness of love in marriage, and that does not include settling for less than what he has for us.
Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
If you are in a dating relationship, it is important to be prayerful and honest about the relationship. This doesn’t mean jumping from one person to the next; it means to learn to wait on the Lord to bring the right person He has in mind.
Settle for a less expensive set of dishes or an older reliable car. But don’t settle down with the wrong person. Settle up to the abundance and great experience of Love only God can deliver.
