Many years my heart longed for a best friend, someone who would support me, listen to me and most of all, someone who would never judge me.
It took me a while to realize this, but God showed me that He had specifically created me this way with a hole in my heart, only His friendship can fill. If you are truly longing for a deeper friendship with God and just do not know how to dig deeper then perhaps this article is written just for you.
So, how can we truly be friends of His? The Bible so beautifully answers this in the book of John 15:14 where it says “You are my friends if you do what I command.”
Being a true friend of God lies in our willingness to offer up our own will in exchange for His. To truly follow his Word and let it guide us through life. To truly mean it when we say, “not our will, but let your will be done.”
One of God’s closest friends, David also said in:
I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.
Throughout the Bible, we meet several friends of God. Abraham is a brilliant example. He longed for a son, and after he had received his heart’s biggest desire, he was still willing to give him up to please his Creator. He trusted his Friend with his whole heart and knew God was in control of everything. This act of laying down his own will brought him closer to his best Friend.
God has always desired to have a friendship with us that’s why He sent us His only begotten Son to die on the cross so that sin cannot separate us from Him. Satan doesn’t want us to be friends with our Creator, but this did not stop God from creating a way. With Him, there is always a way.
What would happen if we all went back to our Bibles, read it until the words are printed on the walls of our hearts? I’m sure we would discover what it means to be true friends of our Creator.
