Spiritual Exercise

I confess…I hate to exercise.

The very thought of exercising makes me tired, and I will find every excuse in the book not to go to the gym. While I know exercise has numerous benefits, I find that I just don’t have the drive nor desire to get started…even if I do get started, I’m pretty sure I’ll quit along the way.

It’s not that I don’t take my health seriously, I suppose I am content that I ‘look’ healthy enough, so there’s no real need to stress myself out with jogging, weight lifting, and healthy eating.

And so it is with my Christian walk sometimes: those days when I’d rather lie in bed and read the Bible on my phone, as opposed to getting up and walking over to flick the switch so I can read the actual physical Bible. It’s far easier to go for long periods without fasting, especially on days when it seems like more of a hunger strike. I know the good it does for me spiritually, but the appeal of the food to the physical body tends to override the decision to make the sacrifice for my spiritual self.

Matthew 5:6

You’re blessed when you’ve worked up a good appetite for God. He’s food and drink in the best meal you’ll ever eat.

Feeding on the Word of God daily is important to maintain spiritual strength, as is daily feeding of the physical body to retain/regain strength. A weary soldier will always lose the war against the enemy. We are cautioned to be alert, but a spiritually starved man cannot wage war against Satan.

 1 Peter 5:8

Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.

As with exercise, the moment you lose consistency, your body has to become once again readjusted to the rigors of training. The same applies for God’s Daily Bread: not feeding on it will make you unable to withstand the schemes of the enemy and you will be an easy target for attacks. We have to exercise self-control in order to stay focused on growing spiritually.

Sure exercising is no fun for me, but I have to stay FIT to FIGHT!

Dig into God’s Word today and feast your eyes on the wonderful promises He has in store for you! He is The Bread of Life and Living Water; you shall not hunger nor thirst anymore.
