The Eye Of the Storm

Where do we find safety?

Many times as human beings, we think the safety is where all the people are; we may think it’s where there is the most amount of light and no threat of a storm. Or, we may think safety means that we need to stay in the same place. Some of us may think safety is moving around from place to place.

At what point does safety become a little too comforting?

An analogy to feeling safe can be linked to a hurricane. Often in a hurricane, people flock to different places, stay inside, and drive away. But in a hurricane, the safest place you could be is right in the middle of the hurricane. I think we often resort to running away rather than facing the very thing that will bring us deliverance from the very things we’ve been fearing.

The word of God says,

“But the LORD is with me like a mighty warrior; so my persecutors will stumble and not prevail. They will fail and be thoroughly disgraced; their dishonor will never be forgotten.”

Jeremiah 20:11

When the storm is raging, and the people around us have hurt us, when we feel like we can’t catch up, when our families are fighting, or we got laid off at our job, when injustice comes, and you just wish people would see what God sees; remember that God stands by our side like a mighty warrior, and he is our champion. He is on your side, and he is with you in the eye of the storm, but instead of running away, run toward it because God has designed you with great authority.

“For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.  So do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord or of me his prisoner. Rather, join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God.”

2 Timothy 1:6-8

Paul reminds the church, which is me and you, to be in the center of the storm sometimes. There are seasons in life where he wants us to be a light in the darkest places, where he wants us to face conflict, where he wants us to remain silent and let him fight, but how can we see the storm if we’re running away from it? True, real, and authentic growth comes in bringing encouragement, joy, peace and knowledge to the darkest places and letting God transform and refine us in the middle of the trials in life.
