The Way of Love ~ Part 4
And if I give all my possessions to feed the poor, and if I surrender my body to be burned, but do not have love, it profits me nothing.
1 Corinthians 13:3
Lord, As I read through the verses in 1 Corinthians 13 and learn more about The Way of Love, I am reminded of how important it is to give with love, and not just to feel good about myself, or do the right thing. I offer my heart to you, and ask that you dust it completely clean of any self promoting attitudes, and help me serve you with love on my heart.
There are people I know who are amazing philanthropists, who give generously to many charities. And honestly, they do it because they care about people. Some are Christians; some are simply people who like to help others.
The way we give is what matters to God. Do we give to get kudos from everyone we know? Do we do it to get our name in the paper, or an award on the stage? Or do we give out of the overflow of our hearts in appreciation for all God has given us?
If we give out of love, He is pleased.
I’ve heard that on average poor people are more generous and giving than rich people. In Luke 21:1-4 Jesus mentions a poor widow who gives two copper coins and he praised her, and not the rich, who we are led to believe were giving more. She is a reflection of sacrificial giving and doing it with love.
I want to be that woman.
After the recession, my check book changed considerably, and I learned how to shop smarter, how to go without, and how to focus on God and not the money I no longer had. During this time, He taught me to give with a cheerful heart, and to give even a small amount when others had needs. I’ll be honest: this was brand new territory for me, but now that life has stabilized, I have not forgotten my Teacher and His lesson plan for me.
I want my giving to reflect a heart filled with Christ-like love.
