Verse of the Day ~ November 19, 2015

Proverbs 9:10

The beginning of wisdom is fear of the Lord, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

Proverbs 9:10

Sometimes people hear the word fear in this context and they often think it means to be afraid of the Lord. It’s not that though . . .  it means to be in reverent awe of Him. God doesn’t want us shaking in our sandals when we think of Him . . . He wants our love, respect and trust.

It’s a bit like a step by step as we seek God in His word:  When we gain godly wisdom we experience reverent awe of all that He is. And with the knowledge we gain, we understand Him better.

For me, the ideal goal is to know God’s word so well I make my life choices with His wisdom in mind.

As Chuck Swindoll says:

“It means living our lives in light of what we know of Him, holding Him in the highest estimation, and depending on Him with humble trust. Only then, Proverbs teaches, will we discover knowledge and wisdom.”

You may have heard of this worthwhile ‘habit’ . . . if not, try adding this to your daily quiet time with the Lord. Each day of the month, read the chapter in Proverbs that matches. For example, on the 10th day of each month I read all of Proverbs 10.  I’ve done this, along with hundreds of thousands of others, for years . . . so I have become more and more familiar with God’s word each month.

One of our sister pages on Facebook is called Proverb Moments and each day a Proverb matching the date is posted.  Join us there too!
