Verse of the Day ~ Psalm 96:6

Verse of the Day

Splendor and majesty are before Him;
    strength and beauty are in His sanctuary.     Psalm 96:6

Coming up in my devotions, God’s Word, and even in songs, the word sanctuary keeps popping up. I started thinking about what sanctuary means and visited my thesaurus where I found it can mean refuge, asylum, shelter, and safe haven. That doesn’t seem to fit with this verse.

So I went digging.

A sanctuary can also be a place of refuge or safety, a sacred or holy place, in a temple or church. And that led me on a new path regarding how my body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. But could it also be called a sanctuary of the Holy Spirit? A sacred and holy place? Which led me further on my journey of discovery: since my body is the temple or sanctuary of the Holy Spirit – God’s Spirit – why am I not treating it the way I should?

God’s whole creation is His sanctuary – and I’m part of it. Since His Spirit is dwelling inside of me, I want strength and beauty to welcome Him, not anything that would be displeasing. I want my heart to be a reflection of His Son.

Verse of the Day ~ Psalm 96:6 Coming up in my devotions, God's Word, and even in songs, the word sanctuary keeps popping up.

Psalm 96:1-6

Oh sing to the Lord a new song;
    sing to the Lord, all the earth!
Sing to the Lord, bless his name;
    tell of his salvation from day to day.
Declare his glory among the nations,
    his marvelous works among all the peoples!
For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised;
    he is to be feared above all gods.
For all the gods of the peoples are worthless idols,
    but the Lord made the heavens.
Splendor and majesty are before him;
    strength and beauty are in his sanctuary.
