The Way of Love ~ Part Eight
Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
Lord, I remember when I first realized Your love was forever. I was 16 and met You with open arms, not really understanding the impact our meeting would have on the rest of my life. I knew the nurturing love of my parents and family. And I knew the wishy washy love of friends. But never did I understand true unconditional love like you offer us. Thank You for your perfect love, Lord.
Believing in Jesus and following Him are such different aspects of the Christian life, and God gently taught me how to follow Him. As I learned, He was patient, believing in my possibilities, hoping for the best, and enduring the times I made big messes of my life; picking me up and setting me back on the path He had planned for me.
When we take a close look at 1 Corinthians 13:7, we see a type of bookend writing style with bear and endure on either end and believe and hope in between. In the Greek, bear and endure are cousins, meaning nearly the same thing. I like thinking of this as a hint to pay close attention!
Perfect love will bear up, believe, hope, and endure.
I don’t have a perfect love like God does, but find it easiest to show when it comes to my children, grandchildren, and closest friends. However, God doesn’t call me to love easily: He calls me to just plain love everyone.
I’m working on it.
