If only each time we were handed life’s deck of cards, we laughed.
I imagine God holding these cards close to His chest while we strain our necks to peep in His hands so we can see what’s coming next. Many times I wish I was the one holding these cards so I could shuffle them at will.
Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.
No one really fancies uncertainty. I know I don’t. I love to make lists and plan ahead and have some semblance of control over what happens. Unfortunately, life gets interrupted and disrupted at any given time by God, and my neatly stacked deck of life cards topple and fall out of place. When this happens, I’m torn between reorganizing, reshuffling and handing those messy cards to God, or spend painstaking time trying to put things back in order myself.
Romans 8:28 And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.
Often, God’s promises seem incredulous, incredible and inconceivable to our ears. We fail to believe that a trump card will be played at some point in our lives and laugh at the absurdity of it happening.
Is God just a Joker?
Sarah probably felt this way. No way was she about to give birth to a son in her old age. She probably considered herself to be ‘worn out’. Useless. Insignificant. Tired. Unqualified. It’s possible that she felt incapable. And many times, so do we. God has unique plans for us, but as the Master Strategist, He carefully lays out each hand in perfect order, waiting for the right time to make a move.
How amazing is God that He can still find us useful in our “old, worn out” state?
Genesis 18:11-12 Abraham and Sarah were both very old by this time, and Sarah was long past the age of having children. So she laughed silently to herself and said, “How could a worn-out woman like me enjoy such pleasure, especially when my master—my husband—is also so old?”
When was the last time you laughed at God’s promises? Maybe you feel as though there is someone better suited for the job, because of age, qualification, gender, race or social standing…but when God does the impossible in our lives, it gives us a chance to say ‘Wow, incredible!”
